Either Or

The current leftish party -- our supposed defender -- is only concerned with solidifying and securing its own power. It professes to fight for the little guys, but when the choice comes down to Main Street vs. Wall Street, guess who gets the nod? Oh, the other guys are worse, I know that. But I can't be the first to point out that next to a swarm of termites, a woodpecker doesn't look half bad, not at first. Either way, tho, yer shingles still get ruined.

So why do people fall for it? We get thrown under a bus by the Vultures in Power, then we turn in disgust to The Option B Team (THIS time they will help us!), then wonder why we're still staring up at mufflers and axles. WHY? Because we're unable to move beyond the Two Choices. That's intentional. The Powers That Be know the Key to mind control is in the illusion of choice. Even if there is no real choice, we've been conditioned to believe we MUST make one (and it better be the correct one).

To the American mind, Schrodinger's cat is both red and blue: the mind knows Power A is both in power and out of power at the same time, ditto Power B. It knows everything and nothing depends on your choosing one of two safe "choices". But it "chooses" anyway, with great fanfare.

We need to find our own Key...

Blogging from the Chestnut Tree Cafe...

I suppose we should talk again about the Orwellian tendencies of the current Executive:

Point A: Promotion of Endless War while at the same time declaring We're Winning.

Point B: Insistence that the rapidly cratering Economy is not only Fine, but Going Swimmingly, Just as We Planned, At Its Heart Robust, and, any minute now, will enable Us to announce over-fulfillment of the Second Four-Year Plan. Didn't you get your chocolates?

Point C: Pay no mind to the small number of Inner Circle weathly persons doing quite well (thanks very much for the tax breaks, says the Boss) while Ordinary Joe Proles make do with spongy meat-like patties and bad coffee from grimy fast-food joints. Don't eat the lettuce.

Point D: What the hell is up with this Abstinence movement? Anti-Sex? More like Anti-Human. You betcha.

Point E: Did I have a Point E? Right. Surveillance. Someone is watching you, maybe not Big Brother, but for sure Big Business. Govt doesn't need to create a huge system with all your info -- it can just tap into what Corporate already has on you: what you spend your $ on, where you go, who you call/email/text/IM/poke... The GPS chip in your phone comes from Big WirelessCo, not Big Govt, so it's okay, says the kid. Just wanna talk to my buds, and facebook rocks, you can tell everyone what you're doing all the time, says the kid. (and they tell two friends, and they tell two friends, and then they tell everyone who has access to the internet, and so on...)

Tick, tock.

Memories...

Do you remember ______? (insert important event that the media talked about endlessly for exactly two days then promptly forgot)

The question is, why even go to the trouble of remembering? All the information you need is available on the internet, for free (usually), RIGHT THERE, at your fingertips. Unless the server is down. Or the page you want is 404-not-found. Or you can't remember what you were supposed to look for. Or you don't really care.

Memory -- at the exact time when millions of seniors desperately want to retain it -- is being devalued by everyone else (except, perhaps, shareholders of Intel and AMD). Brain-based memory has been relegated to the Luddite trash-heap, along with typewriter ribbons and 35m film. Memory can now be BACKED UP (i.e. forgotten about) via digital photos, online calendars, zip drives, TiVo, cell phones with huge phone books (who out there even remembers their own phone number? anyone?) -- so WHY in the name of Christmas do you even try to memorize anything anymore? Important dates? Presidents? The states? The countries in Europe, for cryin out loud? (don't even get me started on US kids and their embarrassing lack of geographical knowledge, that's another post...) Then, the kid says, You don't need to memorize anything, because you can always google it. Right. And, says the kid, why would you even want to know about some moldy old war, or some moldy old president with a moldy old wig and bad teeth?

Don't tell me about the "good ol' days," Grandpa, when kids minded their folks and everyone sat around the Victrola and listened to Benny Goodman. We have bright, shiny stuff now. We have Fake Friends on Facebook and 147 channels on HDTV and Prada's 2008 line.

Shut up, kid. You don't know jack.

This is the Captain speaking: Our hyper-consumerism and the relentless pursuit of More, Better treats the Past as no more important than obsolete products to be discarded, like yesterday's fashion.

We are doomed.

Right.
I've done some scouting about, and all points seem to, well, point, to GC. Global Centurion LLC, the obscure corporation that no one will talk about. Our investigations are getting into dangerous territory, but I can safely say that I will have more devastating information very soon. Not every one of their minions is a scaredy-cat. The brave will prosper, people. One man has the answers, and I know who he is.

Some more railing about the industry...

SAC is a behemoth. It's everywhere. Proof that the Military-Industrial Complex is alive and well. But wait, there's more. GC, Malley Inc -- racking up the contracts. Who's overseeing them? Ike warned us, but did we listen? I'll tell ya, gone are the days when a Repub pres can get all honest on ya. (not that Ike was a saint, or the Prophet, mind you - but he at least provided O.Stone with a great intro.)

Where was I? Right. SAC. M-I-C. I'm working on it.

Security? It's Private

There's an column in the Star Trib today about the privatization of the police: you know, the for-profit goons hired by corporations and wealthy citizens to give "special service" above and beyond the municipal police. Sounds like a good idea, right? Our cops are overworked, cities are over-budget -- let's bring in the private sector to "clean things up" more "efficiently" right?

Not so fast. Our cops have to abide by the Constitution -- you know, that much-maligned little document that the Administration is trying so hard to eviscerate -- but the privates DON'T. They're not government, they don't have to give you due process. Oh, you can sue them in civil court, but good luck with that, after the fact, after you're detained, beaten, etc, etc.

And it's not just local cops. Prisons are run by for-profit corps, and guess what their incentive is? More prisoners = more money? Where do you think their lobbying dollars go to?

And, the Star Trib point out: "...there are about 20,000 private police and military personnel in Iraq, working for the Defense Department."

What's next, people?

We've had some server issues, and posts between Dec 2004 and Dec 2006 were wiped clean. The Captain and his Army will begin to repost the old posts, but it may take a while...thanks for your patience.
